Car thieves are terrorising Sussex
A gang of vicious car thieves are smashing into rural properties and stealing expensive cars. Their violence is escalating and it is feared someone will soon be killed. The prediction comes true when Sir Mathew Markham, a prominent Brighton businessman is murdered.
Detective Inspector Angus Henderson can see differences between the methods employed by the car thieves and the way the victim died, but his bosses, the press and the general public believe it was the gang and are baying for justice.
The DI must go out on a limb to prove another murderer is responsible, but in doing so, he puts his own life on the line.

4 stars

A gang of car thieves breaks into homes in the dead of night and threatening the homeowners to give up their keys to their high end (read: expensive), cars, they then drive off with the cars. But this last attack ended up with the man of the house in the hospital with several broken bones and other injuries. Things are now getting very serious.

DI Angus Henderson, DS Carol Walters and the rest of the team are tasked with catching the thieves. The level of violence used against the owners of the cars is escalating. The last householder told the police that there were four of the thieves.

When Sir Matthew Markham is killed, Henderson doesn’t believe that his death is tied to the car theft ring. But he is fighting an uphill battle. For his superiors believe that Markham’s death is part of the ring of thieves.

Henderson walks a fine line between legal and illegal in pursuing the truth. His life is in danger. Following a wild action scene and an impressive chase (even with cars and boats), Henderson catches the villain responsible for the murder of Sir Matthew and a motorcyclist.

This is a well written and plotted novel. Iain Cameron does a splendid job of combining a police procedural with sufficient private life to make the book entertaining. It is written in a linear fashion; one event follows another in a logical manner. This is my second novel by this author and I enjoyed it. I look forward to reading the next in this series.

a fun read
An excellent police procedual. Highly recommended. Well written, believable characters & an exciting conclusion. I will read the complete series
Enjoyable
New author for me ,really enjoy the Scot Inspector n his problems , touch of humor,n unusual plots ,shall continue reading his novels
I am enjoying this DI Angus series but it one of the detectives is married to a COLOMBIAN but they keep spelling it COLUMBIAN.
I assume they mean the country in South America and not the district of Columbia Washington, DC.
Apart from that the books are interesting with some errors in spelling and grammar.
I enjoy detective novels set in England or Scotland so I tend to overlook / accept a lot when reading one.
I do find the plots in this series to be interesting and a page turner.
While I have enjoyed how the author weaves a good mystery with various threads of inquiry and numerous characters, the first two of his books have each contained "scenes" where Henderson has altercations with the villains. In this, the second of the Henderson series, some of these altercations are really a bit unbelievable. It spoils the otherwise interesting crime scenario. I will, however, read the third in the series hoping that the detective finds other ways to entrap the bad guy(s).
This book starts very well and becomes complex - the business details are absolutely accurate and reflect the author's knowledge. Sense of place is well done and so are most characterisations. Unfortunately the denouement when it begins to unfold seems out of character for DI Henderson and it becomes another Brighton chase - which we have seen so much of in the Roy Grace novels. A shame because it could have been so much better. despite this I liked it - well enough done to entertain. I will try the next one.
